Parmi les terres cuites que l\u2019on recouvre d\u2019un enduit destin\u00e9 \u00e0 en supprimer la porosit\u00e9, la fa\u00efence<\/strong> est une technique bien d\u00e9termin\u00e9e par la nature de l\u2019enduit qui la recouvre. La composition de la terre varie suivant les lieux, mais est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement faite d\u2019argile plus ou moins pur, de sable et de marne calcaire ; cuite, elle prend une tonalit\u00e9 qui oscille entre le gris-jaune et le rouge. Elle est alors enti\u00e8rement recouverte par un enduit opaque et blanc \u00e0 base de sel d\u2019\u00e9tain que l\u2019on appelle \u00e9mail stannif\u00e8re.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

D\u2019autres parts, parmi d\u2019autres, les services de Pont-aux-Choux et les fabriques de Lorraine ne sont pas de v\u00e9ritable fa\u00efence avec \u00e9mail stannif\u00e8re mais de c\u00e9ramique \u00e0 pate blanche, \u00e0 vernis plombif\u00e8re transparent appel\u00e9es aussi fa\u00efence fine.<\/span><\/p>\n

Le d\u00e9cor de la fa\u00efence peut \u00eatre appliqu\u00e9 directement sur \u00e9mail cru, elle est dite au <\/span>grand feu\u00a0<\/span><\/i>; ou bien sur \u00e9mail d\u00e9j\u00e0 cuit, il s\u2019agit alors de la technique du <\/span>petit feu<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n
